Taichong, Great Surge
Liver 3 (Taichong in Chinese – English translation meaning ‘Great Surge’).
This point located on the dorsum of the foot, between the first and second metatarsals (the big toe and the second toe).
When struck with a heel stomp apart from causing severe pain, it has the potential to cause temporary paralysis of the foot and possibly multiple fractures of the bones in the foot. It can cause flaccidity and weakness of the leg with an inability to walk.
This is an excellent point for small or short people to utilise in self-defence. While striking the point itself will cause paint, it is best used as a pressure point to weaken or distract an opponent in the lead up to a bigger, more devastating attack.
